Fiorentina striker Alberto Gilardino is guaranteed a spot on Marcello Lippi’s final squad headed to compete in South Africa 2010.

Gilardino scored the precious equaliser against the Republic of Ireland enabling Italy to successfully qualify to the World Cup to defend the title won in Germany 2006. The former Milan attacker also scored a hat-trick to help the Azzurri overturn a 2-0 deficit against Cyprus to win 3-2.

He finished the season with 15 goals in 33 Serie A appearances and is considered one of Italy’s more experienced strikers since he participated in Germany 2006 assisting on the goal scored by Alessandro Del Piero in the semi-final against hosts Germany.
